Certificate Overview: Recent pandemics (HIV, SARS, avian influenza) are just one indicator of the increasingly globalized nature of health and health care. Demand for global health education and experience has increased as governmental and nongovernmental agencies call for global health personnel. Professionals trained to address underserved populations are especially needed. Increased migration and disease proliferation require that healthcare providers, at home and abroad, become comfortable with different cultures, global health issues and diseases.

Opportunities upon Completion: Governmental and non-governmental organizations both domestically and internationally that deal with global health issues, such as: immigrant/migrant health organizations, multi-lateral organizations (e.g. WHO), disaster relief organizations, ministries of health, policy makers, funding organizations, and clinical organizations.

Graduation Requirements: The Global Health Certificate Program is a 19 credit hour program that offers a unique inter-professional opportunity for graduate students interested in gaining a global perspective on healthcare through coursework and a 2-week capstone/field experience. Upon applying for graduation (for degree-seeking students) or completion of the certificate requirements (for non-degree students), you must contact the program coordinator for verification of completion and the awarding of the certificate.

Global Health Capstone Experience (HSP 5931 and HSP 5911): The capstone experience is a service, clinical or research project integrating aspects of global health that impact developing country populations (2 credit hours each).

Admission Requirements: The Certificate program will accept students in two categories: (1) those who have been admitted to an advanced-degree program at Ohio University and (2) those who possess a bachelor’s or advanced degree but are not currently in a degree program at Ohio University.

Students who have already been admitted to an advanced degree program at Ohio University (degree-seeking graduate students) need to complete an Application for Update of Graduate Academic Program. This application can be obtained online or in-person from the Graduate College. The completed application, including the signature of an advisor and the certificate/program coordinator, should be submitted to the Graduate College office at Ohio University.
To apply for the Certificate as a non-degree student, you must submit an application, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score, post-secondary transcripts, an essay on career goals and objectives, a resume, and three letters of recommendation and submit to this package to the Graduate College.
