Certificate Mission: The Geographic Information Science Certificate prepares graduate students in Geography and other disciplines for a wide variety of government, nonprofit, and private sector professional positions, as well as advanced academic study, that utilize geospatial analytic methods and techniques.

Delivery Mode: Athens Campus

Certificate Overview: Geographic Information Science (GIS) is an important synthesis of traditional mapping with more advanced tools of data modeling and analysis to provide new and enhanced information on geospatial topics. The power of GIS is the use of spatial analysis techniques to analyze geographic information. The GIS certificate offers non-geography and geography graduate students an opportunity to gain the knowledge, theory, and training to use GIS as a tool to answer research questions relevant to their disciplines. This graduate certificate program offers a balance of theory and technical training in Geographic Information Science. The certificate program is designed to accommodate both degree and non-degree seeking students.

Opportunities upon Completion: Job opportunities for GISc specialists abound in both government and private sectors. Depending on skill level, career tracks include, but are not limited to the following: geospatial analyst, spatial database administrator, cartographer, remote sensing analyst, software designer, data technician, GIS educator, and project manager.

Graduation Requirements:

A minimum of 15 credit hours in which the student has earned a cumulative gpa of 3.00, and to include the following:

  1. Required core course: GEOG 5730, Principles of GIS
  2. Supporting courses (choose two): GEOG 5600, GEOG 5660, GEOG 5740, or GEOG 5760
  3. Elective (choose one):  BIOS 6700, CS 5440, EE 6643, GEOL 5050, HLTH 6040; PBIO 5150, SOC 5500

Admission Requirements: No requirements beyond University admission requirements.
