African Culture through Music and Dance Certificate

Certificate Overview:  There is a growing interest and focus on African Studies at Ohio University and across the United States. The Certificate in African Culture through Music and Dance is a specialized program in African Studies for graduate students who are majoring in African Studies, music and dance, anthropology and other majors. Students seeking the Certificate must complete 20 semester credit hours and maintain a 3.0 GPA in certificate courses. Some courses will be available through the highly encouraged OU Summer study abroad program “African Culture through the Arts.” 

Opportunities upon Completion: The program seeks to expand students’ cross cultural awareness especially African cultural attitudes towards the performing and visual arts. Music graduates will be better equipped for emerging multicultural classrooms. Dance students are provided with new dance structures and movements for their creative works. Other majors are provided with in-depth knowledge of African cultures through music and dance. Completion of relevant courses and participation in the OU African Ensembles and African Culture through the Arts Education Abroad Program in Ghana will provide undergraduate and graduate students with a multicultural foundation, enhanced by personal experiences in African cultures through arts.

Graduation Requirements:

Core 1 Requirements: Students should complete a minimum of three (3) credit hours of core 1.

Core 2 Requirements: Students should complete a minimum of three (3) credit hours from core 2.

  • DANC 5550: Dance Ethnography: Intellectualizing the Body’s Motion (3.0HR)

African Ensemble Requirements: Students should complete a minimum of two (2) credit hours of courses designated to Ohio University African Ensembles.

Electives Requirements: Students should complete a minimum of four (4) credit hours of elective courses.
