Art History Major (B.A. in Art History)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Ohio University Honors Tutorial College

The Honors Tutorial program in Art History balances a commitment to breadth and rigor with an opportunity for self-disciplined and highly motivated students to explore fundamental and cutting-edge issues creatively. It is a four-year program during which time students are expected to take a tutorial course each term, along with language, collateral studies and upper-division art history courses. This enables students to acquire the full range of skills necessary to successfully continue in graduate study. Students will have excellent opportunities for intensive study with the art historians in the School of Art.

Tutorials during the first two years have fixed content, moving from general knowledge of art history to a more intense and in-depth experience than would otherwise be available to students.  Third year tutorials include methodologies and students decide on a topic for the thesis, begin research, and submit a thesis proposal. In the fourth year students pursue their topic in depth and write a thesis based on original research.

Applicants are selected on the basis of superior academic ability and the potential for self motivated study and research. A high school class rank in the upper 10%, high scores on standardized tests (a minimum of 30 on the ACT or 1300 on the SAT), and a personal interview with the Director of Studies of the Art History Program of Study are all required for entry as a freshman. This is a four year program, but we will consider the applications of current Ohio University freshmen.

Tutorials: 12 tutorials in Art History: three general surveys of art history (one of those non-western); four topic-specific tutorials (western, non-western, theory, and methodology); five thesis related tutorials.

Art History Courses: 9 Art History upper-division courses, 2 each of western, non-western, and theory.

Collateral (Supplemental) Courses: Art 283 Digital Photography, one studio art course, Anthropology 372 Cultures of the World, Communication Studies 215 Argumentative Analysis and Advocacy, and English 280 Expository Writing and the Research Paper. Two years of foreign language courses in two different languages. 10 additional Collateral Studies Courses selected from approved lists provided by the Director of Studies. One Freshman HTC Seminar, one Freshmen composition course, and one 300-level writing course are also required.

Thesis: Senior Thesis completed in topic area approved by the Art History committee.

Deadline: December 15
