The Center for International Studies offers certificates in African, Asian, East Asian, European, Latin American, Southeast Asian Studies and War and Peace Studies for students who wish to add an international dimension to their major, or who are interested in an international career or graduate work in area studies. The certificate is noted on your transcript upon graduation.

The African Studies Major and Certificate grew out of the excitement emanating from the decolonization of the continent in the mid-1960s and the awareness of the important role Africa could play in world affairs.  Today the multi disciplinary nature of the program allows the student to build a course of study reflecting Africa’s contemporary reality.  Themes include the socioeconomic development of the continent in the context of Africa’s grand cultural and historical traditions.  Students may also view the study of Africa as an excellent case study of the process of social change in the developing world.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required in certificate courses. Complete 20 hours from at least 3 departments in the African Area Studies courses, including no more than 4 hours in language coursework. Complete two years or equivalent in African language(s) coursework. Students may petition the Certificate Director to have a language they take elsewhere fulfill the requirement. Courses taken to satisfy this requirement will not count towards the Language Requirement. African languages taught at Ohio University: Akan, Arabic, French, Kikuyu, Somali, Sudanese Arabic, Swahili, Tigrinya, Wolof.
