Digital Media: Special Effects, Games, and Animation (B.S.C.)

This plan of study is designed to provide students with skills in video game production and development; computer animation and digital postproduction; and effects for video, film and multimedia. Emphasis is placed on the processes of design and production and the responsibilities and opportunities of working within a creative team. Students are required to complete the MDIA core, the Digital Media sequence core, and at least eight hours of approved elective courses.

General Requirements for all MDIA majors

The Media Arts and Studies general requirements work in concert with the Ohio University General Education requirements. Students must complete the University General Education requirements of Tier I and Tier II and then concentrate on the following extension of those Tiers:

General Requirements for All Majors


1. Arts and Humanities


Eight hours of 300- to 400-level courses (or 200-level or above for language courses). Courses include Tier I junior composition with the balance of the hours chosen from art, art history, classical languages, comparative arts, dance, English, film, humanities, modern languages, music, African American studies, philosophy, and theater.

2. Social Sciences


Eight hours of 300- to 400-level courses chosen from anthropology, classical archaeology, economics, history, international studies, management, marketing, political science, psychology, and sociology.

3. Communication Sciences


Eight hours of 300- to 400-level courses (or 200-level or above for language courses) from classical languages; computer science; information and telecommunication systems; hearing, speech, and language sciences; communication studies; journalism; linguistics; modern languages; African American studies; and visual communication.

Additionally, African American Studies and University Professor courses may be used to fulfill Media Arts and Studies general requirements.

4. Media Arts and Studies


The following foundation courses are required of all majors:

Sequence Requirements


Students entering the School of Media Arts and Studies as fall quarter first-year and transfer students must successfully complete TCOM 101 with a C or better and earn a C or better in TCOM 203, 204 and/or 205 before proceeding to many of the courses in the program.

Corollary


Each student in the School of Media Arts and Studies is required to complete a corollary of coursework. These are courses outside Media Arts and Studies selected by you and your academic advisor to enhance your area of interest. The corollary totals a minimum of 32 credit hours (20 at the 300-400 level), from no more than two areas. For instance, students in the video production sequence might choose courses from the School of Film, while students interested in politics and the media might find courses from the political science area useful.

Corollary


32 hours in corollary courses outside of the School of Media Arts and Studies that support program goals (from no more than two areas with at least 20 hours at the 300 to 400 level).
