Program Overview

This program has three concentrations: dietetics, school nutrition, and environmental nutrition. The Dietetics concentration, qualifies you to sit for the Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) examination and to apply for a dietetic internship (supervised practice) to become a registered dietitian (RD). An Environmental Health minor is incorporated within the Environmental Nutrition concentration. You must declare the minor upon entering the major if you opt for the Environmental Nutrition concentration.

Program Standards

To remain active in this program you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 (C) or better in all hours attempted at Ohio University.
  2. Earn at least a 2.0 (C) or better in each course listed under Core Major and Concentration Requirements and Core Required Related Courses.

You must successfully earn a C (2.0) in all required NUTR courses by the end of the third enrollment in each course. Other schools and departments may also limit the number of times you may retake a course. If, after your second enrollment in a NUTR course, you have not earned a C (2.0) or better, you will receive a letter from the Nutrition coordinator informing you that you must obtain a satisfactory grade at the end of the next enrollment in that course or you will be dropped from the major.

Generally, the policy on internships, practica, field experiences, and senior internship requires registration for the experience in the quarter(s) that the requirements for the course are actually fulfilled. The only exception to this requirement is an experience that takes place over winter break, in which case registration for the course may occur during either fall or winter quarter. Be sure to work closely with your adviser/program coordinator to ensure proper registration and fulfillment.

To Become a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) and Registered Dietitian (RD)

All graduates of the Applied Nutrition (Dietetics concentration) program are eligible to sit for the DTR exam. To become a registered dietitian, first complete a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and coursework approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association, followed by a CADE-accredited or approved, supervised practice program, which typically lasts 6-12 months, at a health-care facility, community agency or foodservice corporation (may be combined with undergraduate or graduate studies). Finally, pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Only the Applied Nutrition (Dietetics concentration) major at Ohio University meets the first step of this process. The program is currently granted developmental accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association, 216 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60606-6995, 312.899.5400. CADE has established a process for making complaints against dietetic education programs. Please refer to http://www.eatright.org/ for the procedure or for more information about CADE.

Post-Graduation Internship or Graduate Program

If applying for a post-graduation internship or graduate program, please be aware of the generally required minimum accumulative GPA of 3.0 (B) or higher. Completing the graduation requirements of Ohio University and meeting the requirements of the Nutrition or Applied Nutrition major does not guarantee acceptance into postbaccalaureate programs for professional experience or graduate study. Separate application and acceptance into such programs is required.
