The College of Health Sciences and Professions consists of the Department of Social and Public Health, the School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness, the School of Nursing, and the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences. To provide students with a variety of local clinical or experiential education opportunities, the schools operate the Ohio University Therapy Associates Hearing, Speech Language, and Physical Therapy clinics; Ohio University Respite Volunteer Program; Atrium Cafe; and Nutrition Treatment Program. The University employee wellness program, WellWorks, is also administered by the College.

A number of master’s and entry-level doctoral degree Ph.D. programs are offered by different schools and departments in the College. All programs are described in detail in the Ohio University Graduate Catalog.

The College will be a college of distinction in preparing health professionals whose work reflects the highest standards of collaboration, ethics, innovation, and commitment to all, especially underserved individuals and populations.

Mission

The College will educate students from various backgrounds in the health professions through rigorous curricular activities that prepare them to take leadership roles in a competitive, technological, culturally diverse, and global environment.

The College will extend its boundaries to enrich the quality of lives, especially for individuals in underserved and vulnerable populations, through interprofessional and community collaborations.

The College will engage students and faculty in the discovery of knowledge that will define the future of health disciplines through applied and basic research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Physical Therapy in the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences does not award a bachelor’s degree although it offers an entry-level doctoral physical therapy program, which leads to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.). A complete description of the program is available in the Graduate Catalog.

Admissions

Freshman admission to most of the majors offered by the College is open. The College does have several programs—athletic training education, exercise physiology, social work, and nursing—for which students are admitted as premajors and then must meet certain criteria in order to be admitted into the major. At this time, athletic training education, social work, and nursing are the only programs that have, in addition to the listed criteria, limited openings in the major. You must apply and be accepted into any of these majors. The baccalaureate nursing completion program and school nurse teaching license are available only to registered nurses (RNs). If you are interested in any of these programs, please read the more detailed description of the specific requirements and application process described either in the school or program descriptions.

If you are already in an academic college at Ohio University and wish to transfer into any program within the College of Health Sciences and Professions (except for athletic training education, exercise physiology, social work, and nursing, which have additional admission requirements), you must have a minimum accumulative GPA of 2.0. Please see School of Nursing program catalog information for additional nursing admission requirements.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarships sponsored by the four schools and departments, and the College of Health Sciences and Professions, for qualified undergraduate students are available on an annual basis. Inquiries about the scholarship program should be directed to the scholarship chair of each school/department or the College of Health Sciences and Professions Student Services office.

Academic and Other Requirements

Most majors within the College have requirements that you must meet in order to remain active or progress in your major. Further information about these specific requirements can be found under each program’s description.

The College’s policy on internships, practica, and field experiences requires that you be registered for the experience in the semester(s) that you are actually fulfilling the requirements for the course.

Graduation Requirements

To qualify for baccalaureate conferral, each graduation candidate in the College of Health Sciences and Professions must earn at least 120 semester hours of acceptable credit, with a minimum accumulative GPA of 2.0 and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the major; complete the major program requirements; and fulfill the University’s General Education requirements.

Advising

Upon entering the College of Health Sciences and Professions, you are assigned a major advisor, who is a faculty member in the department/school offering your major program. Faculty advisors are available to assist you in the preparation of schedules and to discuss academic- and career-related topics. However, you are responsible for completing all University, college, and department/school requirements for the degree. To assist you in keeping track of your progress in completing degree requirements, you will receive a DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) report each semester during priority registration. This report lists the requirements for your degree and details your progress toward completing them. If you are interested in determining your progress for other or additional majors, the College’s Student Services Office can provide you with a “what if” DARS report, or you may login to your student portal at my.ohio.edu to access your DARS.

Professional Certification or Licensure

If you are majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders , you may begin to pursue a teaching license as an undergraduate, but the requirements for licensure are completed at the master’s level.

You will be eligible to sit for the appropriate licensing or certification exam if you successfully complete either of the following majors: Athletic Training Education or Long-Term Health Care Administration . Completing the Applied Nutrition (Dietetics track) option fulfills the academic component for becoming a registered dietitian, but not the internship component. In addition, students completing the dietetics program are eligible to sit for the examination to become a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR).The Environmental Health Science major fulfills the educational requirements for registration as a sanitarian. Completing the Community Health Services program enables you to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam. The Child Life Specialist (CLS) concentration of our Family Studies program is the recommended path for students interested in a career as a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS). These and other specific program requirements can be found in the description of each school. You will be eligible to apply to sit for registered nursing licensure examination if you successfully complete the BSN major.

Special Information for Students

The College of Health Sciences and Professions provides opportunities for educational, leadership, and professional development through its honoraries and professional organizations.

Nursing students can be elected to Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honorary. Eta Sigma Gamma, the national health science honorary, has an active chapter in the Department of Social and Public Health. The Ohio University chapter of the National Student-Speech-Language-Hearing Association offers ample opportunities of preprofessional networking and community service.
