The MIS Department has been designated a Center of Excellence by the State of Ohio in recognition of the program’s integration of a strong business background with advanced training in the application of computer technology to business. MIS students learn to apply information technology to design systems to solve business problems. The areas emphasized in the eight required MIS courses include relational database technology, object-oriented programming languages, local area networks, systems analysis, programming, Web applications, and groupware.

The majority of these courses involve the development of hands-on skills where students must actually use the technology to design business applications while learning information systems concepts at the same time. This combination of business courses with information systems training creates graduates who can function well in the business environment while being able to work with technical staff to apply computers to the solution of business problems.

Students learn to apply various computer solutions to business problems by actually using state-of-the-art hardware and software in the computer laboratories. The college maintains four instructional laboratories linked via local area networks to the University’s wide area fiber optic network for use in MIS courses.

A wide variety of companies hire College of Business graduates to work as management information systems consultants. Computer manufacturers and software companies hire graduates to analyze client business requirements and provide technical support for salespeople. MIS graduates working at smaller companies have the widest range of career opportunities, working as system managers, network managers, data processing managers, or as expert end-users in departments outside of data processing.
