ECON 5850 - Economic Methodology In this course, students engage in independent research using real-world data. It utilizes statistical testing of economic hypotheses using research methods of economic analysis. The economic models tested are those commonly employed in the microeconomic and macroeconomic literature.
Requisites: Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May be repeated for a maximum of 8.0 hours. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to take on intellectual risk by engaging in the process of independent research in the field of economics.
- Students will be able to apply research methodologies to analyze economic data.
- Students will be able to describe various economic and social issues that face societies.
- Students will be able to evaluate important assumptions that underlie estimation, modeling, and data analysis.
- Students will be able to formulate their own hypotheses and test these hypotheses using econometric methods utilized by researchers publishing in the field of economics.
- Students will be able to logically state conclusions based on their analysis of real-world data.
- Students will be able to discuss the limitations of their study and recognize the complexities of their data analysis.
- Students will be able to connect academic knowledge about economic issues and estimation methodologies with their experience of conducting independent research.
- Students will be able to make connections across various social science disciplines and quantitative methodologies and discuss empirical findings from the perspective of an economist.
- Students will be able to adapt and apply critical thought and research skills gained in the classroom to engage in independent research.
- Students will be able to synthesize their own research and communicate their research findings using written papers.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a developing sense of self as a learner and build on their classroom experiences to respond to new and challenging contexts by leading their own research from start to finish.
- Students will be able to locate and collect economic data from various databases and compile extensive datasets to research a topic of their own choosing.
- Students will be able to write an advanced programming code using software packages such as Python, R and SAS in order to analyze empirical data.
- Students will be able to articulate and describe their research work in oral presentations.
