EDCE 7555 - Theory & Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy The course aims at guiding students to personalize the process of counseling and become knowledgeable about counseling theories and practice. It emphasizes the practical application of various therapeutic approaches and stresses the critical evaluation of each theory through exercises, activities and case studies. The course incorporates outcome research associated with various theoretical perspectives with specific attention given to the personal characteristics of the client and counselor, and how those characteristics impact the therapeutic process. In addition, there is a focus on the diverse factors that influence the therapeutic process and ethical practices of the counselor.
Requisites: EDCE 6555 Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,CR,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to differentiate between the various theorists’ views of human nature and the basic assumption underlying each theory.
- Students will be able to identify the primary characteristics of each theory, its important concepts and what distinguishes one theory from the other.
- Students will be able to asses the most important therapeutic goals and the respective roles and the function of the therapist and the client.
- Students will be able to recognize the techniques and methods used in each theory and its application to the needs of clients and the respective contexts or settings.
- Students will be able to explain the strengths and limitations the theory.
- Students will be able to compare how their personal philosophy of counseling fits in with the underpinnings of a given theory and how this shapes their personal theoretical orientation.
