EDCE 7246 - Counseling Children and Adolescents


The course increases student knowledge of the application of a variety of counseling theories and practices in assisting children and adolescents in school and clinical settings. The role of the school counselor in assessment, prevention, and intervention in schools is emphasized. Creative and age-appropriate methods to counsel children and adolescents experiencing common mental health disorders are covered along with legal and ethical issues pertinent to counseling minors.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe and apply theories and models of counseling children and adolescents
  • Students will be able to describe the characteristics, risk factors, and warning signs of students at risk for mental health and behavioral disorders
  • Students will be able to list common medications used to treat children and adolescents and describe possible side effects that may affect learning, moods, and behaviors of students in schools
  • Students will be able to identify signs and symptoms of substance abuse in children and adolescents as well as the signs and symptoms of living in a home where substance use occurs
  • Students will be able to identify and describe community resources and referral sources
  • Students will be able to apply skills to critically examine the connections between social, familial, emotional, and behavior problems and academic achievement
  • Students will be able to describe strategies to advocate for and support children and adolescents with mental health issues
