AT 6360 - Psychosocial Issues in Athletic Training


Psychosocial theories relevant to the physically active patient are explored. Associated psychological disorders, coping mechanisms, treatment options, and referral strategies designed to improve mental health are evaluated.

Learning Outcomes:
 

  • The student will be able to analyze psychosocial developmental theories relative to age and injury/illness.
  • The student will be able to recognize signs, symptoms, and potential treatments of substance abuse and eating disorders.
  • The student will be able to recognize signs, symptoms, and potential reporting mechanisms of child neglect and/or abuse.
  • The student will be able to identify commonly prescribed psychotropic medications and their adverse effects and potential interactions.
  • The student will be able to demonstrate mediation techniques aimed at preserving the athletic identity and challenging more complex levels of psychosocial development.
  • The student will be able to demonstrate effective communication and appropriate terminology in making referrals for psychological interventions.
  • The student will be able to demonstrate appropriate record keeping when documenting mental health interventions and referrals.
  • The student will be able to describe the grieving process typically encountered following a catastrophic event.
