POLS 5590 - Terrorism


The course introduces students to questions regarding ethics of violence, radicalization, extremism, terrorism and counterterrorism. Students explore various terrorist organizations, their ethical perspectives and methods they have employed, as well as counterterrorism operations including questions surrounding ethical decision-making.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to discuss one’s own ethical core beliefs and how they shape ethical conduct and thinking about violence, extremism and radicalization.
  • Students will be able to descibe ethical perspectives, theories, and/or concepts when it comes to both state-sponsored and group violence.
  • Students will be able to evaluate, and connect ethical issues in terrorism and counterterrorism.
  • Students will be able to apply ethical perspectives, theories, or concepts to a counterterrorism decision-making situation.
  • Students will be able to evaluate alternative ethical perspectives within a counterterrorism decision-making situation.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe major historical and contemporary terrorist groups, their goals, and methods.
  • Students will be able to design, plan, and deliver a written project that is organized coherently and logically, and that employs relevant evidence and examples from the world of politics and government.
