POLS 5570 - National Security in the Contemporary Era

Introduces the concepts and problems of attaining international “security” in an ever-changing world. Profound changes at the international level have taken place in the past decade which have had a major impact on how we conceive of security. Provides an overview of the traditional and new sources for insecurity and explores the consequences of states’ quests for security in the contemporary era.

Requisites:
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply and orally present the arguments regarding state security to an issue of student’s own design.
  • Know the major policies regarding U.S. national security and the arguments in favor of and against those policies.
  • Think critically about state policy decisions in regard to national security.
  • Understand essential principles of security and insecurity for states in the system.
  • Understand the key forces that drive both the impulses for war and peace in the system.
