LING 5701 - Grammar and Syntax

This course familiarizes students with philosophical foundations and theoretical argumentation of Chomskyan generative grammar known as the Principles and Parameters Approach with some reference to its later development called the Minimalist Program. The approach is explanatory as well as descriptive. Students learn how to develop theoretical hypotheses to account for syntactic phenomena and how to improve the accounts by continuous testing and revision of the hypotheses. They are also introduced to seminal research papers written on first and second language acquisition in the theoretical framework of Chomskyan syntax.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify structural relations of dominance and c-command among syntactic constituents.
  • Students will be able to apply Binding Theory to analyze referential dependency.
  • Students will be able to apply X-Bar Theory to draw tree representations of phrases based on the notions of head, complement, specifier, and adjunct.
  • Students will be able to analyze and draw trees representations of complex sentences with head-movement, DP-movement, and/or Wh-movement.
  • Students will be able to evaluate, summarize and critique first and second language acquisition research papers and make clear oral presentations.
  • Students will be able to write a paper on a chosen topic in developmental or descriptive linguistics using a generative syntactic framework.
