ENG 5510 - Teaching Language and Composition


Content and methods of presentation for teaching language and composition in high school. Not applicable to Arts and Sciences 2000-level requirement.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to cite research in connection with developmentally appropriate lesson plans aligned with standards for teaching writing and language (e.g., conventions of grammar, usage, vocabulary, and context) in grades 7-12.
  • Students will be able to articulate what means of assessment are best aligned with learning objectives to evaluate student writing.
  • Students will be able to analyze information about multiple school and community settings to compare and evaluate possible teaching contexts.
  • Students will be able to design instruments for getting to know students and involving families in the grades 7-12 teaching context.
  • Students will be able to cite research that informs a range of strategies for teaching grammar in connection with writing.
  • Students will be able to compose lesson plans that apply appropriate scaffolding to aid grades 7-12 students in the research and writing process.
