EDCE 8920 - Practicum in Counselor Education and Supervision


In the doctoral practicum, students complete a 100-hour supervised counseling experience under the tutelage of a counseling practitioner knowledgeable and experienced in the setting and with the clientele served. The practicum experience is designed to extend or enhance students’ professional counseling training and experience. The course involves weekly group supervision on the practicum experience, counseling conceptualization and skill development in addition to training on outcome research and field-based research.

Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate the strengths, limitations, and efficacy of counseling theories in applied practice and research.
  • Students will be able to describe and apply a personal philosophy of counseling that reflects appropriate integration of counseling theories.
  • Students will be able to implement multicultural and social justice counseling competencies in case conceptualization and practice.
  • Students will be able to provide critical peer supervision feedback.
  • Students will be able to identify and implement evidence-based counseling practice.
  • Students will be able to design a proposal for counseling research.
  • Students will be able to apply ethical decision-making models in counseling practice and research.
