PSY 6760 - Diversity Issues in Research and Clinical Practice


Examination of the sociocultural context of human behavior and, in particular, issues of diversity in research and clinical practice. Methodological and epistemological issues in the study of culture in psychology; influence of culture on psychiatric diagnosis and the prevalence of mental disorders; effect of culture on the therapeutic relationship.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of assessment, treatment, and consultation skills that are effective in working with diverse groups in both clinical and research settings.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends related to multicultural and cross-cultural psychology.
  • Develop increased awareness and understanding of self in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, and other sociodemographic variables in the context of sociocultural and international diversity in both clinical and research settings.
