HLTH 2230 - Introduction to Appalachian Studies


This course provides an introduction to the Appalachian region, including historical, cultural, and contemporary context and issues experienced by those who live in the region, and an examination of stereotypes associated with Appalachia.

Learning Outcomes:
  • ¿Students will be able to recognize of the complexity of elements important to members of Appalachian culture in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices.
  • Students will be able to define the Appalachian region according to the Appalachian Regional Commission.
  • Students will be able to identify stereotypes associated with Appalachia and why the student¿s own dominant cultural group may hold these stereotypes.
  • Students will be able to discuss events, such as a single-industry-based economy, that have helped to create the Appalachian region.
  • Students will be able to identify strengths of the Appalachian Region and how they relate to the value system of the dominant culture or the students¿ own culture.
  • Students will be able to describe Appalachian responses to current events through the lens of regional communication norms and practices.
