POLS 2200 - The Politics of Law
Introduces the study of law as a political process with special emphasis on courts, legal ideologies, violence, and the mobilization of rights claims in social and political conflict.
Requisites: One 1000-level POLS course

Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to define core concepts of public law and understand their role in developing knowledge about law and politics.
- Students will be able to explain the primary terminology and basic structures of local, state and federal court systems, the roles of the different levels of courts, and the institutional and political practices the U.S. Supreme Court.
- Students will be able to state conclusions about the nature of U.S. court organization and discuss the political implications of this.
- Students will be able to compare the merits of public law-related theories, apply these to sociolegal phenomena, and critically assess them from a range of perspectives.
- Students will be able to explain, discuss, and critically analyze a variety of legal and socio-legal issues as an informed civic participant.
- Students will be able to describe ways that the legal system is influenced by the social identities of lawmakers and legal practitioners.
