COMM 5411 - Crafting a Positive Media Message for STEM Students learn how to take complex concepts, research findings and data and synthesize the information into cogent media messages for public consumption. Media interviewing techniques are analyzed and strategies explained. Students learn how to shape, promote and deliver policy messages that resonate with the public.
Requisites: COMM 5401 Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to demonstrate how journalists get information.
- Students will be able to define a brand and deliver it in multiple ways.
- Students will be able to describe STEM-based research projects without jargon.
- Students will be able to write and deliver an effective pitch.
- Students will be able to write and promote a STEM-themed op-ed piece.
- Students will be able to translate STEM jargon into understandable news items.
