RFM 2600 - Foundations of Aesthetics in Retail and Fashion Merchandizing


This course focuses on the characteristics, relationships, and theories of color and design based on principles and theories regarding retail and merchandising. Course emphasis is placed on applications of color in retail/fashion, visual merchandising, and the retail environment in the fashion industry. A variety of art media are introduced as methods for visually communicating through various presentation formats. Creativity, originality, and the conception process are emphasized through course projects.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate the fundamental principles of design.
  • Students will be able to develop visual ideas in both hand exercises and digital media.
  • Students will be able to recognize and analyze basic quality craftsmanship regarding art skills.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze color in the context of historical, cultural, and commercial applications.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate profieciency skills in the practice of drawing, cutting, sewing, and assemblage in the production of quality-crafted projects.
  • Students will be able to create an electronic professional portfolio that demonstrates knowledge of composition and layout.
