REC 4220 - Culture and Diversity in Recreation and Leisure


Designed to engage students in critical analyses of various concepts and issues related to culture and diversity in recreation and leisure. Students consider the implications of varying dimensions of diversity for recreation and leisure participation and professional practice.

Requisites: REC 2010 and 2750 and (Jr or Sr)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate an awareness the influence of one’s own cultural background and experiences on one’s values, attitudes, and biases about recreation and leisure.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of stereotyping, discrimination, and oppression on recreation and leisure participation among individuals and groups who are subject to these phenomena.
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of various racial, religious, sexual orientation, cultural, and ethnic groups.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics and needs of culturally diverse populations in recreation and leisure services settings.
  • Describe basic concepts and issues related to culture and diversity in recreation and leisure.
  • Develop practical applications designed to enhance workplace diversity in recreation and leisure services.
  • Discuss life experiences, cultural heritage, family systems, and historical background of culturally diverse populations and the relationship of these factors to the nature recreation and leisure participation among these populations.
