REC 4560 - Ecotourism Destinations


Provides students with opportunities to examine the principles and practices of ecotourism in action through a Study Abroad experience to select ecotourism destinations. Emphasis is placed on the role of sustainable tourism development strategies in minimizing environmental and cultural impacts of tourism, while also promoting the economic development of host communities in these tourism destinations.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply general principles of sustainable tourism development in assessing the character of ecotourism as it is practiced within a specific context.
  • Assess the environmental, cultural, and economic impacts of ecotourism within the context of a specific ecotourism destination.
  • Express a greater awareness of themselves and their cultural identities relative to the culture of the host community of specific ecotourism destinations.
  • Identify and describe governmental policy frameworks used to regulate and manage ecotourism development and practice within the context of specific ecotourism destinations.
  • Identify and describe operational aspects of ecotourism enterprises within the context of specific ecotourism destinations.
  • Identify and describe the role of non-governmental organizations in promoting environmental conservation and preservation within the context of specific ecotourism destinations.
