REC 3550 - Principles of Ecotourism


Introduce students to both theory and practical applications of concepts surrounding ecotourism and sustainable development. An understanding of the benefits and weaknesses of ecotourism as a sustainable development approach is the focus of the course. Theory, practice, history, terminology and issues of ecotourism planning and management are examined. Additionally, the motives and behaviors of tourists, natural resources as attractions and destinations, social and resource responsibility and establishing policies and principles for sustainability are discussed.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze and discuss ethical dimensions of ecotourism and sustainable development.
  • Assess economic, sociocultural, and environmental costs and benefits associated with the use of natural resources for recreation and tourism development.
  • Describe the historical development of the demand for recreation and tourism opportunities at natural resource attractions.
  • Examine practical ways in which ecotourism can be used to promote sustainable development.
  • Identify and discuss basic planning and management frameworks and guidelines for ecotourism development from a national and international perspective.
  • Identify and discuss select concepts related to ecotourism and sustainable development.
