RHT 3410 - Principles of Tourism


Exploration of major concepts in tourism, what makes tourism possible, and how tourism is or can become an important economic influence on a region, state, or country.

Requisites: Soph or Jr or Sr
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to analyze the internal and external factors that affect tourists’ behavior.
  • Students will be able to define the terminology appropriate to the travel and tourism industry.
  • Students will be able to articulate the economic, cultural, and environmental impacts of tourism on both the host and world communities.
  • Students will be able to describe the components of the travel and tourism system.
  • Students will be able to identify the factors that influence the supply and demand of travel and tourism opportunities.
  • Students will be able to explain the role of tourism as a vehicle for understanding different cultures and values of places.
  • Students will be able to discuss the roles of state, national, and international professional associations, government agencies, trade and professional literature in tourism.
  • Students will be able to interpret the global changes and technology which impact the tourism industry.
