RFM 2890 - Professional Career Search Strategies


This course provides an in-depth study of career opportunities and job responsibilities in retail merchandising and fashion product development career paths in preparation for future employment. Assessment of personal and professional skills and interests, resume and cover letter development, interviewing skills and professional dispositions are explored.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to analyze the characteristics of the apparel environment: Career opportunities-demands and responsibilities, the competitive marketing environment, customer service, and consumer behavior.
  • Students will be able to assess self (interests and abilities) and set new goals for improving or developing competencies necessary for success at entry level in the retail and apparel merchandising industry.
  • Students will be able to create a compelling and professional cover letter.
  • Students will be able to create a professional, yet personalized, resume.
  • Students will be able to develop an appreciation for and demonstrate understanding of the role of equality, equity, diversity and inclusion as it relates to professional development, career decision making, and in the workplace.
  • Students will be able to develop appropriate inter-personal skills and self-presentation of an individual professional profile.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate effective ways to Multi-task.
  • Students will be able to articulate and analyze the variety of influences that shape global fashions, and the influence of individual fashion choices.
  • Students will be able to articulate the relationship between the discipline of Family and Consumer Sciences and the retailing industry.
  • Students will be able to develop ethical standards in personal and professional roles.
