REC 4600 - Concepts and Issues in Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Studies


This course provides students with an opportunity to critically examine a broad range concepts and issues central to the field of parks, recreation, and leisure studies. The purpose is to engage students in consideration of key issues and dilemmas that are currently prevalent in the field and to consider ways that the field can help address issues of broad societal concern.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to critically assess selected assumptions, concepts and theories related to parks, recreation and leisure studies.
  • Students will be able to critically assess management techniques and processes involved in planning, organizing, and conducting various recreation and leisure experiences.
  • Students will be able to investigate and discuss issues critical to the management of parks, recreation, and leisure services agencies and organizations.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of recreation management to address broad societal concerns.
  • Students will be able to utilize scholarly resources as a basis for promoting best practices in the field of parks, recreation, and leisure studies.
  • Students will be able to complete an assignment using a format, language, or visual representation in ways that enhance meaning.
