REC 3270 - Coastal Kayak Instructor Certification


Emphasizes various teaching strategies and learning styles in preparing students to provide high quality instruction to beginner coastal kayakers. The student will learn to prepare lesson plans, give presentations, and provide evaluative feedback to students. This an American Canoe Association coastal kayak instructor certification course. Successful instructor candidates must demonstrate effective group leadership skills, paddling proficiency, technical knowledge, and teaching competency.

Requisites: Permission required
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,CR,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply basic principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential while leading a group on a coastal kayaking excursion.
  • Apply the principles of experiential learning in delivering high quality lessons beginner coastal kayakers.
  • Articulate and model the principles and practices of Leave No Trace in minimizing environmental impacts related to coastal kayaking.
  • Effectively describe and model coastal kayaking strokes, techniques, and maneuvers.
  • Effectively plan, organize and lead coastal kayaking adventures.
