REC 3240 - Outdoor Leadership


This course is an intensive 25-to-30-day, field-based course designed to teach students the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required for effective outdoor leadership. The course helps students refine basic wilderness living skills and develop expertise in specialized modes of wilderness travel. Students develop leadership and teaching skills needed to facilitate safe, enjoyable, and environmentally responsible wilderness-based programs.

Credit Hours: 9
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 18.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to exercise proficiency in practicing basic wilderness living skills.
  • Students will be able to exercise proficiency in select modes of wilderness travel.
  • Students will be able to practice professionalism and good expedition behavior in their interactions with others within the context of a wilderness expedition.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of experiential learning in delivering specific lessons related wilderness living and travel.
  • Students will be able to apply basic concepts of leadership while leading others in a wilderness environment.
  • Students will be able to use the principles and practices of Leave No Trace in minimizing environmental impacts resulting from recreational and educational use of wilderness environments.
  • Students will be able to apply basic principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential while leading a group in a wilderness environment.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate effective judgment and decision-making skills while leading others in a wilderness environment.
  • Students will be able to identify and utilize professional resources as a basis for continued professional development in the field of outdoor leadership.
