REC 3220 - Whitewater Kayak Instructor Certification


Emphasizes various teaching strategies and learning styles in preparing students to provide high quality instruction to beginner whitewater kayakers. The student will learn to prepare lesson plans, give presentations, and provide evaluative feedback to students. This an American Canoe Association whitewater kayak instructor certification course. Successful instructor candidates must demonstrate effective group leadership skills, paddling proficiency, technical knowledge, and teaching competency.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply basic principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential while leading a group in whitewater kayaking.
  • Apply the principles of experiential learning in delivering high quality lessons beginner whitewater kayakers.
  • Articulate and model the principles and practices of Leave No Trace in minimizing environmental impacts related to whitewater kayaking.
  • Effectively describe and model whitewater kayak strokes, techniques, and maneuvers.
  • Effectively plan, organize and lead single-day whitewater kayaking trips.
