EDEC 6310 - Early Childhood Curricula and Methods


Early Childhood Curriculum and Methods is a course in which students gain knowledge and skills to work with young children between the ages of 0 to 8 years who have typical or atypical development. Students acquire knowledge and skills in various curricular approaches, models of teaching, instructional methods, and programs that have an empirical base of effectiveness for young children. Students explore the relationships among curriculum, learning opportunities, and contextual variables on children’s learning and development.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to plan and implement developmentally appropriate, and individually appropriate curriculum based on children’s individual characteristics, individual goals, early learning standards, and school and district priorities.
  • Students will be able to develop, adapt, and implement instructional methods and strategies that can facilitate children’s communication, physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
  • Students will be able to assess and reflect on curricula, learning environments, and instructional methods to establish priorities for differentiated instruction with clear learning objectives for all students.
  • Students will be able to utilize instructional and behavioral strategies that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, contextually relevant, and responsive to all learners.
  • Students will be able to plan and implement instructional lessons that utilize multiple activities, settings, and individuals in the environment to provide multiple and varied learning opportunities for students.
  • Students will be able to select and use appropriate materials and assistive technology to enhance the learning, behavior, and development of all students.
