EDTE 8040 - Writing for Publication


This course is designed to introduce doctoral students to the professional publication process and the crafting of literature reviews. Students will become familiar with editorial policies of relevant periodicals, identify various professional publication outlets and review a manuscript using professional editorial criteria. The course will culminate in a manuscript or alternative product that will be submitted for publication.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Candidate will be able to apply strategies for communicating with journal editors and publishers for matching manuscripts to appropriate publication outlets.
  • Candidate will be able to complete a peer review of a manuscript using the review policies of a specific periodical and participate in a follow-up discussion.
  • Candidate will be able to develop a proposal for a manuscript/product to be submitted for publication.
  • Candidate will be able to explain publication and review policies of relevant periodicals and how they relate to the publication process and manuscript development.
  • Candidate will be able to identify and present an understanding of other publication outlets and writing opportunities, including on-line journals, book chapters, software, monograph, media reviews, grant proposals, etc.
  • Candidate will be able to identify the purpose, audience, content, and style of major professional periodicals in their specialization area.
  • Candidate will be able to select potential publication outlets for manuscripts and make an initial contact with the editor.
  • Candidate will be able to submit a completed manuscript/product for publication.
  • Candidate will be able to use relevant computer databases for reviewing professional literature.
  • Candidate will be able to write a concise review of research on a topic of choice.
