EDTE 7200 - Foundations of Elementary Reading Instructions


Critical evaluation of literature on recent research, objectives, content, and methodology in reading and reading instruction. current problems and issues, recent trends and emphases in teaching practices. Analysis of the impact of the history of reading/literacy instruction, dominant theories of learning and philosophies of education on current thinking and practices in reading/literacy.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Candidates will be able to explain the different historical movements in reading instruction and explain their impact on current practices.
  • Candidates will evaluate current literature in literacy for its underlying theoretical and research foundations.
  • Candidates will examine current national, state, and local influences on reading/literacy instruction for their theoretical and research foundations.
  • Using information studied in class, candidates will select a current topic, practice, initiative, etc. for in-depth analysis.
