EDTE 7160 - Observing Instruction and Assessing Learners Outcomes in Classrooms and Other Settings


Study of conceptual frameworks, strategies and approaches for observing and assessing the processes and outcomes of instruction and instructional performance in classrooms and/or other educational settings. Focus will be directed to a) questions or concerns guiding the interest, b) paradigmatic or conceptual frameworks adopted, c) learning outcomes intended by the instructor and/or the observer and/or relevant others. Emphasis will be placed on identification of empirical/evidence-based studies of teaching and learning, especially research on the teaching and learning of school subjects, managing and monitoring student learning, project-based learning, specialized or alternative curriculum models, induction-year teaching, and/or other frameworks for which empirical evidence and/or published support materials can be identified.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Advanced degree students will adopt an explicit inquiry framework to guide systematic observation of instruction, including articulation of question(s) being explored, variables and learning outcomes of interest, among others.
  • Advanced degree students will compare extant literature on a particular instructional approach with systematic observation of the approach in a classroom or other educational setting.
  • Advanced degree students will examine literature on alternative approaches to observation and assessment of instructional performance in classrooms and/or other educational settings.
  • Advanced degree students will produce a mini-portfolio, a poster for R&CA, or a manuscript for publication, based on systematic observation of instruction and instructional performance in a classroom and/or other educational setting.
  • Advanced degree students will select from a participant-observer continuum of approaches and protocols to carry out systematic observations of instruction in classrooms and/or other educational settings.
