EDTE 7150 - Theories of Curriculum and Curriculum Change


Review of selected approaches to the study of curriculum, curriculum construction processes, and alternative frameworks for approaching curriculum development and change initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on articulating a) evidence-based approaches for proposing studies of curriculum and instructional processes in classrooms and schools, b) the relative influence of various participants in curriculum and curriculum development processes, including students, teacher(s), materials, media and technology, in relation to social and cultural contexts in classroom, school, home and community settings, and c) student learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Advanced degree students will articulate a curriculum change initiative and then convene a focus group, expert panel or critical friend inquiry to critique, trouble-shoot, and support development of the curriculum change protocol.
  • Advanced degree students will identify a curriculum change/improvement initiative of professional interest and construct a set of comparison/contrast scenarios to illustrate a trajectory for change and alternative student learning outcomes.
  • Advanced degree students will review selected literature on alternative approaches to curriculum and empirical studies of curriculum change processes.
