EDTE 6170 - Introduction to Teaching Portfolio


This course introduces teacher candidates to the development of professional teaching portfolio. It fosters professional growth, facilitates analytic reflection, and critical thinking skills. Candidates understand professional teaching standards and learn the tool of assessment through hands-on experience. Teachers candidates with teaching licensures develop a National Board Certification Portfolio- a capstone professional development portfolio.

Requisites: EDRE 5010 and EDTE 5100 and 6600

Learning Outcomes:
  • Articulate basic concepts, contents, and structures of portfolio.
  • Create a personal teaching portfolio that documents the journey of professional growth and learning at the completion of the program.
  • Demonstrate understanding of professional teaching standards, e.g. Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) principles, the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and Ohio Standards for Teaching Profession.
  • Develop standards-based professional portfolio.
  • Explain possible uses for a professional teaching portfolio in career development.
  • Select powerful artifacts from professional activities to demonstrate growth on INTASC, NBPTS and OSTP standards.
  • Transform the pre-service teaching portfolio into a job-search portfolio, professional development portfolio for in-service teachers, and for National Board Certification Portfolio.
  • Understand National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) by International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE). Create an electronic portfolio.
  • Use analytic reflection skill to explore and understand themselves as teachers.
  • Use portfolio as an assessment in future classroom.
