EDTE 5220 - Assessing and Teaching Struggling Readers This course focuses on an initial introduction to in-depth assessment and evaluation of students’ reading ability with the intent of preparing programs of instruction designed to improve reading weaknesses. Candidates learn and administer a number of different assessments and plan instruction according to determined student needs. Emphasis is placed on working with a single student who has been identified as reading below grade level. Candidates write a final case report of one student’s reading strengths and needs.

Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,CR,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Candidates will communicate a student’s progress in reading instruction to parents (care givers) and other professionals.
- Candidates will develop an understanding of the role of standardized tests in determining students reading instructional needs.
- Candidates will learn to administer and interpret a number of different reading assessment instruments.
- Candidates will plan and teach appropriate lessons based on their assessment of a student’s reading.
