EDRE 7510 - Qualitative Interviewing Methods in Education


The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the development of qualitative interviews as a method. The course examines the process of designing different kinds of qualitative interviews. In the course, students engage in conducting three different kinds of interviews, preparing transcripts of interviews, and analyzing qualitative data. Finally, students examine different theoretical approaches to interpreting interview data.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to discuss the different kinds of qualitative interviewing.
  • Students will be able to explicate the historical and theoretical development of qualitative interviewing
  • Students will be able to Implement a qualitative data collection project by employing different kinds of qualitative interviews.
  • Students will be able to use and understand the different types of qualitative interviews
  • Students will be able to analyze qualitative data using one of the many conceptual or theoretical approaches to qualitative data analysis
  • Students will be able to develop interview protocols and transcribe qualitative interview data
