EDCE 8990 - Leadership in Counseling


Focuses on universal principles related to becoming a leader. Theories of leadership development will be examined and discussed. Through a learner focused environment, the students will experience the process of becoming leaders and advocates in their profession and in their communities. Students will also be encouraged to develop their own leadership capacities, and focus will be placed on the application of course material to professional counselor development.

Credit Hours: 3

  • Identifies current multicultural issues as they relate to social change theories.
  • Understands advocacy models.
  • Understands current topical and political issues in counseling and how those issues affect the daily work of counselors and the counseling profession.
  • Understands theories and skills of leadership.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide leadership or contribute to leadership efforts of professional organizations and/or counseling programs.
  • Understands models, leadership roles, and strategies for responding to community, national, and international crises and disasters.
