EDCE 8600 - Counselor Education


This course provides a history and overview of the counselor education profession. Students explore theory, research, standards and skills necessary to function effectively as counselor educators. Discussion also includes standards and ethical responsibilities in counselor preparation, counselor development, and pedagogy. Readings from professional journals and texts supplement class lecture, discussion, and application activities.

Credit Hours: 4

  • Students will be able to develop a template for screening, remediation, and gatekeeping functions relevant to teaching.
  • Students will be able to develop an assessment of learning and program evaluation plan.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe the role of mentoring in counselor education.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe emergent research practices and processes in counselor education.
  • Students will be able to distinguish and articulate academic, disposition, and professional behavior components of student assessment.
  • Students will be able to develop a professional conference proposal related to counselor education.
  • Students will be able to specify roles and methods of leadership in counselor education programs.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge of accreditation standards and processes.
  • Students will be able to identify the role of counselor educators advocating on behalf of the profession and professional identity.
