EDCE 8550 - Counseling Theory Advanced


Using a seminar format, this course provides a scholarly examination of counseling theory in practice, counselor education and supervision. Theories of counseling and psychotherapy are compared, contrasted and evaluated in the context of practice settings and populations. Students critically examine individual, relational, cultural, contextual and political factors in theory development, implementation, and research and evaluation. The historical context of theory development, current issues and trends, innovative approaches and theoretical integration are also discussed.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast at least two theories of counseling and psychotherapy.
  • Students will be able to recommend strategies to integrate multicultural and social justice issues in counseling theory and practice.
  • Students will be able to present a critical review of theory-based research and evidence-based practice.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate scholarly review of theoretical concepts and application in case conceptualization.
  • Students will be able to design a counseling theory module for use in counselor education
  • Students will be able to construct a personal philosophy of counseling that reflects substantive integration of counseling theories.
