EDCE 7701 - Suicide: Essentials for Helping Professionals


The purpose is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to identify risk factors that put individuals in danger of suicidal behaviors and to implement prevention programs and interventions for members of a diverse society.

Requisites:
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify risk factors that put individual clients in danger of suicidal behaviors.
  • Students will be able to understand cultural differences and how they impact risk factors, assessment, intervention, and prevention of suicide.
  • Students will be able to use appropriate interventions to safeguard high-risk clients.
  • Students will develop knowledge and skills to assess and intervene so that a suicide can be stopped.
  • Students will develop prevention programs for schools and communities.
  • Students will learn to help surviving family members and friends overcome feelings of shame and guilt and give hope where there once was none.
  • Students will understand that clinicians need hope when they face the death of a client, and identify coping mechanisms that will help prevent impairment.
