EDCE 6810 - Seminar in Counseling


This course provides a culminating evaluative capstone experience for the master’s degree in Counselor Education involving the scholarly application of counseling research, theory, and advocacy. Students are evaluated on their professional and academic writing abilities, implementation of a community-based project, and compilation of a portfolio tracking students’ counselor development throughout formal counselor preparation.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate a professional identity consistent with counseling core values, certifications, licensure, and organizations.
  • Students will be able to create a wellness plan that demonstrates self-care strategies appropriate to the counselor role.
  • Students will be able to describe the role of wellness and prevention in counseling practice.
  • Students will be able to construct an integrated personal theory of counseling that demonstrates ethical and culturally relevant strategies for promoting optimal development, wellness and mental health over the lifespan.
  • Students will be able to design a community-based project that demonstrates knowledge of counselor roles in promoting social justice, wellness, and mental health through prevention, education, and advocacy activities.
  • Students will be able to develop and implement strategies for organization and/or community needs assessment and evaluation.
