CE 6500 - Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment


Physical processes controlling the fate and transport of pollutants in surface water soils. Processes studied include advection, diffusion, sorption, Henry’s law, and abiotic transformations. Govering mathematical equations will be derived and several modeling packages utilized.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be introduced to the concepts of mass balance, advection, diffusion, dispersion, and complete mixing.
  • Students will be introduced to the theory of unsaturated flow.
  • Students will learn concepts concerning precipitation and volatilization.
  • Students will learn how to model contaminant movements in rivers and lakes.
  • Students will understand the advection/dispersion/reaction equation.
  • Students will use the finite difference approximation method to model and solve pollutand transport problems.
  • Students will use the finite element method to model and solve pollutand transport problems.
