CE 5830 - Principles of Pavement Design


Fundamentals of wheel loads and stresses in pavements. Properties in pavement components and design tests. Design methods and evaluations.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will become familiarized with the general pavement design procedure.
  • Students will learn about different types of pavement used in the U.S.
  • Students will learn about modern nondestructive methods that can be used to evaluate pavement performance.
  • Students will learn about pavement rehabilitation methods.
  • Students will learn about vehicle classifications and how live loads influence pavement structures.
  • Students will learn which environmental factors influence pavement performance.
  • Students will understand how each layer in the pavement system is characterized in the design process.
  • Students will understand how flexible (or asphalt concrete) pavement structures are designed.
  • Students will understand how rigid (or concrete) pavement structures are designed.
