THAR 2140C - Theater in Education
This is an experiential-participatory class that includes a pedagogical and service-learning component. Students will learn fundamental acting techniques, improvisations and theater games appropriate for the elementary school population. We explore methods that cultivate the imagination, creative collaboration, and the expressive use of body and voice toward developing story and character. We align each exercise with specific learning outcomes, and have the opportunity to apply those learned teaching skills in educational and outreach settings. Elements of production are introduced (material, venue, design, fundraising and marketing), and applied to organizing an informal public performance. The class revolves around the transformative power of theater, and how it can enrich lives and support curriculum.

Learning Outcomes: - The student will be able to effectively introduce children to fundamental acting exercises
- The student will be able to imagine and clearly describe dramatic characters, their relationships, and their environments
- The student will be able to collaboratively plan and prepare improvisations and demonstrate various ways of staging classroom dramatizations
- The student will be able to visualize environments and construct designs to communicate locale and mood using visual elements (such as space, color, line, shape, texture) and aural aspects using a variety of sound sources.
- The student will be able to manage a classroom efficiently
- The student will be able to aide in producing an informal theatrical public performance
