THAR 2711 - Theater and Performance History II This course explores performance, literature, and theatrical practices from the Enlightenment through contemporary America, as well as in Africa and the Middle East. We strive to better comprehend history through performance, and to develop the critical and aesthetic tools to appreciate and understand plays, rituals, design, and theories of theater in their original contexts, as well as in today’s world.

- Develop original thoughts about artistic, social, philosophical, and personal issues, and enrich the ability to express those thoughts in writing and in conversation.
- Have an understanding of key plays, playwrights, genres, artistic movements, and performance practices in relation to their historical, social, and political contexts.
- Identify and analyze key factors in the complex relationship between art and society, including the representation of gender, race, and class.
