EDTE 6410 - Teaching Science and Social Studies to Young Children


Teaching Science and Social Studies to Young Children prepares students with a broad-based understanding of central issues involved in the learning and teaching of science and social studies. Students acquire strategies for designing learning experiences that allow young children to develop concepts and skills in social studies and science, starting with the places closest to them (i.e., families, neighborhoods, and living and non-living systems in the surrounding environment) and expanding outward to the broader community, the world, and the universe. Students acquire knowledge of state and national standards, the role of literacy in science and social studies, and content knowledge in science and social studies. Students develop skills in inquiry, content-specific instructional practices, play-based instruction; models for teaching, and assessing science and social studies learning.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will use inquiry, reflective skills, and course resources to accurately represent one’s understanding of disciplinary knowledge, disciplinary practices, and the practice of science and social studies teaching.
  • Students will plan culturally relevant learning experiences that engage learners and allow them to construct understanding of content.
  • Students will plan culturally relevant learning experiences that use appropriate discipline-specific teaching strategies, and are consistent with state and national standards.
  • Students will explain the nature of science and social studies, the varied cultural, societal, and technological applications of science and social studies, and the relationship between the two disciplines and the community.
  • Students will develop a variety of formative and summative assessments that are developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and provide an accurate measure of student learning of content and practices.
